Opponent Reckya Madougou, who received a 20-year prison sentence, is now isolated. The prison authorities refuse to allow him visits. His lawyers denounce political persecution.
In Benin, Patrice Talon’s opponent, Reckya Madougou,
who was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment after a mock trial
is on her own. Even the lawyers of the former advisor to Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé are forbidden to visit. Held in a cell at Akpro-Missérété prison in southeastern Benin, Reckya Madougou appears to be deliberately isolated. Prior to her trial in July 2021, one of the opponent’s lawyers, Mario Stasi, had denounced “outrageous conditions of detention”, pointing out that Reckya Madougou was not allowed visits, apart from that of her mother.
The lawyer spoke of “the real isolation she is being subjected to”.
